Great news is coming from Major League Soccer, especially for fans of Lionel Messi. Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas recently shared an exciting update about Messi’s future at the Florida-based club. And yes, it might just make Messi fans smile from ear to ear!
As many of us know, Messi officially joined Inter Miami in the summer of 2023 after leaving Paris Saint-Germain. He signed a two-and-a-half-year contract that is set to expire at the end of the 2025 MLS season, around December. However, there’s an important detail: the deal includes an option to extend the contract for an extra 12 months.
This extension will only be activated if both the club and Messi agree. The good news? Jorge Mas sounds very optimistic that Messi will continue his journey in Miami beyond 2025.
In an interview with Futbol de Primera, Mas shared his hopes clearly. He said, “My hope is that we will see our captain and number 10, Lionel Messi, playing in our new stadium in 2026.”
He also mentioned that discussions with Messi are ongoing. “All the elements seem to be aligned for a beautiful future for the club and Messi. The decision is his, but I believe we’ll have clarity within the next 60 to 90 days,” Mas added.
Even more interesting, Mas revealed that once Messi retires, he will still be part of Inter Miami as an active shareholder. This shows the club’s deep respect for Messi and his impact, while also creating a legacy for his children.
“Our relationship is strong and full of mutual respect. We’re giving Messi the space to enjoy his time,” said Mas.
Messi is currently playing alongside some of his closest former teammates from FC Barcelona: Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Luis Suarez. All four of their contracts are set to expire at the end of the 2025 season. But that might not be the end of the story.
There’s also a strong rumor that Inter Miami is targeting another big star Kevin De Bruyne! The Manchester City midfielder is reportedly considering leaving the club this summer, and Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano is said to be interested in bringing him to MLS.
