Padang – The government continues to make efforts to provide official recognition and legal protection for ancestral lands owned by indigenous communities. One of the concrete steps taken is holding the Socialization of Ancestral Land Registration and Administration in West Sumatra. This significant event will be opened directly by the Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/Head of the National Land Agency (ATR/BPN), Nusron Wahid, on Monday, April 28, 2025, at the Auditorium of the State University of Padang (UNP).

According to Rezka Oktoberia, Special Staff of the Minister of ATR/BPN for Agrarian Reform, this event is a concrete manifestation of the government's commitment to accelerating the ancestral land registration program and ensuring legal protection for the land rights of indigenous communities across Indonesia.

"Minister Nusron’s presence shows that the government is truly serious about protecting ancestral lands. This is part of our commitment to safeguarding the rights of indigenous communities," said Rezka Oktoberia in Padang on Sunday, April 27, 2025.

The Importance of Ancestral Land Registration for Indigenous Communities

During the event, Rezka emphasized that the socialization aims to provide indigenous communities with a clear understanding of the importance of the ancestral land registration process.

He explained that this registration is not just a formality, but an essential step to safeguard the existence of indigenous communities amidst the challenges of modernization and the risk of land conflicts. With registered ancestral land, the land rights of these communities are officially recognized by the state, reducing the risk of land disputes or unjust land appropriation.

"This ancestral land registration is a concrete step by the government to recognize the existence of indigenous communities and prevent the loss of their land rights in the future," explained Rezka.

Involving Many Stakeholders for Strong Collaboration

The execution of this event is not only supported by the Ministry of ATR/BPN but also by various other stakeholders. These include related ministries and agencies, local governments, indigenous institutions, the Kerapatan Adat Nagari (KAN), Bundo Kanduang, universities, and civil society organizations.

Notable figures such as Deputy Chairman of Commission VI of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Andre Rosiade, and Member of Commission II of the House of Representatives, Rahmat Saleh, will also attend, highlighting the strategic importance of this initiative to support the national agrarian reform program.

"Through this collaboration, we aim to accelerate the registration of ancestral lands across Indonesia. Of course, we will continue to respect the local wisdom and social and cultural characteristics of indigenous communities in each region, especially in West Sumatra," said Rezka.

Symbolic Handing Over of Ancestral Land Certificates

As part of the event, Minister Nusron Wahid will hand over several ancestral land certificates to indigenous communities. One of the certificates is the Certificate of Land Management Rights (HPL) for 21,933 square meters of ancestral land, which will be given to Kerapatan Adat Nagari V Koto Air Pampan in Pariaman City.

This certificate handover is a symbolic moment, marking the official recognition of indigenous land rights by the state. It provides a sense of security and strengthens the position of indigenous communities in protecting their territories from illegal claims.

After the event at UNP, Minister Nusron is scheduled to provide a briefing to all the regents and mayors in West Sumatra at the Governor’s Office. This briefing will focus on the latest policies related to land and spatial planning, so local governments can align their actions with national programs.

Full Support from ATR/BPN Ministry Officials

In this event, Nusron Wahid will be accompanied by senior officials from the Ministry of ATR/BPN, including:

  • Inspector General of ATR/BPN, Dalu Agung Darmawan

  • Head of Public Relations Bureau, Harison Mocodompis

  • Director of Communal Land Regulation, Institutional Relations, and PPAT, Iskandar Syah

  • Head of the West Sumatra BPN Regional Office, Teddi Guspriadi, and their entire team.

The presence of these officials underscores the importance of the Ancestral Land Registration and Administration program for ATR/BPN.

Ancestral Lands: Cultural Heritage that Must Be Protected

Ancestral lands are an integral part of the identity of indigenous communities in Indonesia, including in West Sumatra. These lands do not only serve as agricultural areas or places of residence, but also hold significant spiritual, cultural, and social value.

However, without official legal recognition, these ancestral lands are vulnerable to being taken over by other parties, either through unjust legal mechanisms or illegal practices. This is why land registration is such an essential step in strengthening the position of indigenous communities and protecting their local cultures.

Long-Term Commitment to Agrarian Reform

This socialization is not just a ceremonial event. It is part of the government’s long-term commitment to realizing true agrarian reform. By accelerating the registration of indigenous lands and strengthening legal protections for traditional land rights, the government hopes to achieve more equitable land justice throughout Indonesia.

Furthermore, this initiative is expected to help reduce agrarian conflicts that often occur due to overlapping land claims.

Through this socialization of ancestral land registration and administration in West Sumatra, the government is reaffirming its commitment to protecting the rights of indigenous communities. The involvement of various stakeholders, from indigenous institutions to the national parliament, is expected to accelerate the process nationwide while respecting the cultural heritage of each region. The direct participation of Minister Nusron Wahid in this event sends a strong signal that the recognition and protection of indigenous lands is now a priority for the government.
